Far Cry 2 - ThreeSpeech Interview Part 2

The second part of the ThreeSpeech interview has been released a few days ago. It contains information about physics and fire in Far Cry 2Far Cry 2.

ThreeSpeech: I heard you went out to Africa to research the gameÖ

For us it was never about having advanced physics for the sake of it. Weíre obviously going to be taking a different approach with it in an open world environment (where itís very much a natural setting with lots of organic elements) than you would if you were doing a corridor shooter or Half-Life 2 or something where physics has very specific connotations.

For us itís mainly about how it makes our world more immersive and more readable. What we want is for the player to be able to enter into this space, be able to look at the way the trees are blowing, the way waterís flowing, the way things are moving, and be able to understand how the game ingredients are going to behave when he has to start dealing with the environment. You know, like, if I get into a truck and Iím driving on a certain type of surface, I want to know that my understanding of how the performance of the truck is going to change is true and accurate.

So to us, physics is just a tool, itís another colour in the palate, but it must always serve a purpose in the gameplay. Fire, for example, the propagation of fire, itís directly linked to other elements Ė any element that should catch fire will. If itís raining, it wonít catch fire because itís wet Ė itís that simple. Itís giving these little pieces of information to the player so he can progress and use the ingredients to make any sort of game he wants. The fire will react to the wind, so we needed to give the player tools to study the windís direction in order to plan attacks [hence, your character carries a handy an anemometer]. You can find your own way of playing with these ingredients.
