TrustedReviews Far Cry 2Far Cry 2 Review

Like a lot of people when Far Cry 2Far Cry 2 was announced last year, I took the idea of a sequel with a pinch of salt. After all, Far Cry already had a spiritual follow-up in Crysis, and I hadn't particularly loved the Instincts games which had reworked Crytek's original for a console audience. To be honest, I saw Far Cry 2Far Cry 2 as a bit of a cash-in; a game designed to keep a franchise going long after its original creators had abandoned it.

While this new addition to the Far Cry series is considered a sequel, it actually has no story ties to the original game. This time we move from the lush Archipelago isles of Micronesia to the harsher terrain of the African jungles and savannahs. The African plains gives ample opportunity for a large world map (50 square km) and open world gameplay that departs from the more linear console versions that came before it.

Cast your mind back and think when the last big stride forward in FPS game design was - perhaps you're thinking that Half-Life 2 fits that description, or maybe even the original Far Cry. Either way, you'd be hard pressed to find any FPS game in the last four years that is as innovative as either of these two. To re-cap a little, when Crytek and Ubisoft parted ways after the original Far Cry game, Ubisoft retained the intellectual property. Crysis (Crytek's spiritual successor to the first Far Cry) was released last November and ended up being little more than an evolution of the original Far Cry formula with the addition of a nanosuit and cutting edge graphics. The question now is can Ubisoft Montreal create an FPS revolution with Far Cry 2Far Cry 2 like Crytek did with the 2004 original?
